Concerts / Special Events

• Musicians Mel Jones and Randy Gardner present an open jam session and concert of mountain and folk music.  [July 1: jam session @ 4 pm, concert at 5 pm]

• Shipbuilding Exhibit Reception and Talk.  After light refreshments, Ralph Stanley speaks on local vessels and shipbuilding.  [July 3: reception @ 4 pm, talk @ 5 pm]

• Reception for Wini Smart & Fred Quackenbush.  Audrey Noether sings and performs on the guitar.  [July 5 @ 12 noon]

• Public Hearing on Winter Transport Options presented by the Transportation Committee [July 8 @ 4:30 pm]

• Poetry Reading by Sam King.  Sam kicks off her poetry workshop with an evening of poetry reading.  [July 8 @ 7:30 pm]

• Audrey Noether and Friends Concert.  [July 15 @ 7 pm]

• Once Loved Arts Auction.  A one-day art extravaganza celebrating Yankee thrift.  A silent and live auction of pre-owned art, antiques, glass, fine china, quilts, and more, plus also fun pieces of jewelry, sculpture, puppets, mosaics, fabric art, etc. made from all sorts of recycled items.  Imaginative local artists prove that one man's trash is another's treasure.

• "Cranberry Island Inspiration" Photography Exhibit.  All lovers of the Cranberry Isles can show off their best photos in this exhibit, from 10 am to 4 pm, over six days.  All photos are for sale.  Opening day features a photo remembrance and memorial ceremony in honor of Louise Marr, a reception, and a book signing and talk by Isabelle Storey.  Commission on all photo sales help support Cranberry House.  [Opening day (August 2): Marr memorial @ 3 pm; reception @ 3:30 pm; book signing and talk @ 4 pm.  Exhibit: August 2 thru 7 @ 10 am thru 4 pm.]

• Night at the Theater in cooperation with the Islesford Theater Project.  GCIHS offers a limited number (20) of free ferry tickets for islanders to attend an 8 p.m. performance at Islesford Neighborhood House (performance tickets not included.)  [NOTE CHANGE IN DATE - August 8: night boat leaves GCI @ 7:40 pm, performance @ 8 pm]

• Birthday Reception for Charlene Allen.  Charlene's paintings will be on display.  [August 7 @ 7 pm]

• Ruth's Choice Movie.  Ruth Westphal's special request evening movie - one of her favorites, from the 1940 novel by Carson McCullers.  [August 9 @ 7 pm - note early start time]

• Piano Concert by Masanobu Ikemiya held at the Church.  [August 13 @ 7 pm]

• Very Berry Festival.  Cranberries, blueberries, and strawberries, yum yum!  Live music and silent auction.  [cancelled August 19 @ 10 am thru 4 pm]

• Dr. Wilson Magic Show at Cranberry House, in cooperation with the Library.  Dr. Wilson performs feats that will amaze and confound you.  [August 21 @ 3:30 pm]

• GCIHS Annual Meeting and Slides.  The usual organizational business, followed by a showing and discussion of GCI slides of the 1960s, from the collections of Mickey Macfarlan and Phil Whitney.  [August 27 @ 7:30 pm]

• Island Portraits Exhibition.  Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, and in cooperation with the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, Artists Janet Badger & Becky Buyers-Basso show Island Portraits of GCI residents interviewed this season.  [October 10-11 @ Cranberry House.  Exhibit Oct 10 (10 am to 5 pm) and Oct 11 (10 am to 2 pm.)  Reception Oct 10 (1-5 pm.)]

Youth Events

• Children's Art Workshop with Charlotte Harlan.  A three-day course for children.  Full course, including supplies, $25.  [August 12, 13, and 14, @ 1:30 thru 3:30 pm]

• Movie Matinees most every Saturday afternoon from June 20 to September 12.

Adult Workshops and Classes

• Matting and Framing with Wini Smart.  In this one-day, two-hour course, Wini shows how to mount and frame a photo or artwork for best possible presentation.  Get your entry ready for the Cranberry Inspiration Exhibit!  This course is free!  [July 16 @ 1:30 pm]

• "Ways with Watercolor" Painting Workshop with Helen Bertles.  For beginning and intermediate painters, this three-session course taught by an accomplished local artist builds basic beginners' confidence, and helps hone accomplished artists' skills.  Each session is from 10:30 am to 3 pm.  Take lunch, or eat at Hitty's Café.  Full course of three sessions, $130; each individual session, $50.  [July 8, 15, and 21 @ 10:30 am.]

• "Dramatic Drawing" Workshop with Wini Smart.  Three sessions, each from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.  Take lunch, or eat at Hitty's Café.  Full course of three sessions, $75; each individual session, $30.  [July 9, 16, and 23 @ 10:30 am]

• "Playing with Words" Poetry Workshop with Sam King.  Through exercises using evocative pictures, engaging in other arts, experience of nature, exploring word origins, writing in form, etc., enjoy the process of allowing words in particular patterns to express what, for you, is true, beautiful, and important.  Full course of 5 sessions, $180; each individual 1.5- to 2-hour session, $40.  Take lunch, or eat at Hitty's Café.  [July 10, 17, 31, and August 7, all @ 2 pm, plus Aug 21 @ 10 am]

• Digital Photography with Geoff Wadsworth & Bruce Komusin.  A four-hour course in July, repeated again in August.  Geoff Wadsworth guides the group around the island, showing how to take beautiful eye-catching photos in morning or afternoon light.  Each image-capturing tour is followed by a hands-on two-hour editing session at Cranberry House, where Bruce Komusin explains the theory and practice of using an image editing program, such as Gimp, or Adobe Photoshop Elements, to optimize and print out the images taken during the tour.  Full course of 1 photo shoot and 1 editing session, $75; each individual 2-hour session, $37.50.

• Basket Making with Christy Benson.  A one-day course, $12;  [July 27 @ 11 am thru 2 pm]

Lectures

• Medication Safety, Storage, and "Brown Bag" Talk.  Sponsored by the Maine Sea Coast Mission and Husson University School of Pharmacy, Dr. Danny Huff will discuss Medication Safety and Storage.  Then you can ask about your own medications.  Please bring all your prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies.  [May 11 @ 8 am]

• Heliker-LaHotan (HLH) Foundation Art Talks.  In cooperation with the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, several talks by HLH resident artists and guests:

• Islander Portrait Talk & Exhibit.  Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, and in cooperation with the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, printmaker Janet Badger of Bangor and photo journalist Becky Buyers-Basso launch a project to record a portion of the visual and oral history of some of the residents of Great Cranberry Island.  [Talk about the project, June 13 @ 2 pm (Cranberry House) and August 28 @ 3 pm (Islesford Neighborhood House); Open Studio with pulling of some prints, August 29 @ 3 pm (Heliker-LaHotan Foundation); Islander Portraits Exhibition, October 10-12 @ 10am to 4pm in Cranberry House]

• Small Boat Building Talk.  Nathan Rome shows slides and explains how to build a small boat.  [July 19 @ 7:30 pm]

• GCI Forest Managment Talk by District Forester Jim Ecker.  [July 29 @ 4 pm]

• Book signing and talk by Isabelle Storey.  Isabelle discusses her book, Walker's Way: My Years with Walker Evans, about her former husband, a well-known Depression-era photographer.  [August 2 @ 4 pm]

• Cranberry Isles Historical Photos, with Janet & Wayne Patton.  Slides and lecture by the Pattons, of the Southwest Harbor Historical Society.  [August 12 @ 7 pm]

• Antarctica Cruise, with Barbara Stainton.  Barbara shows and narrates a video about her recent trip to the home of penguins in the extreme south.  [August 24 @ 7 pm]

• The Towns Slides, with Phil Whitney.  Phil shows and comments on 150 historical slides from the 1940s taken by John Towns.  [Sept 3 @ 7 pm]

Movies

All movies shown at Cranberry House are presented by the Great Cranberry Library, in cooperation with GCIHS.

Our special license for showing movies to the public does not allow us to list the movies on the internet, so as not to compete with regular movie theaters.  However, you can pick up a printed list at the library, or at Cranberry House.
