Once Loved Arts Auction. A one-day art extravaganza celebrating Yankee thrift. A silent and live auction of pre-owned art, antiques, glass, fine china, quilts, and more, plus also fun pieces of jewelry, sculpture, puppets, mosaics, fabric art, etc. made from all sorts of recycled items. Imaginative local artists prove that one man's trash is another's treasure.

"Cranberry Island Inspiration" Photography Exhibit. All lovers of the Cranberry Isles can show off their best photos in this exhibit, from 10 am to 4 pm, over six days. All photos are for sale. Opening day features a photo remembrance and memorial ceremony in honor of Louise Marr, a reception, and a book signing and talk by Isabelle Storey. Commission on all photo sales help support Cranberry House. [Opening day (August 2): Marr memorial @ 3 pm; reception @ 3:30 pm; book signing and talk @ 4 pm. Exhibit: August 2 thru 7 @ 10 am thru 4 pm.]

Night at the Theater in cooperation with the Islesford Theater Project. GCIHS offers a limited number (20) of free ferry tickets for islanders to attend an 8 p.m. performance at Islesford Neighborhood House (performance tickets not included.) [NOTE CHANGE IN DATE - August 8: night boat leaves GCI @ 7:40 pm, performance @ 8 pm]

GCIHS Annual Meeting and Slides. The usual organizational business, followed by a showing and discussion of GCI slides of the 1960s, from the collections of Mickey Macfarlan and Phil Whitney. [August 27 @ 7:30 pm]
- Island Portraits Exhibition. Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, and in cooperation with the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, Artists Janet Badger & Becky Buyers-Basso show Island Portraits of GCI residents interviewed this season. [October 10-11 @ Cranberry House. Exhibit Oct 10 (10 am to 5 pm) and Oct 11 (10 am to 2 pm.) Reception Oct 10 (1-5 pm.)]

Children's Art Workshop with Charlotte Harlan. A three-day course for children. Full course, including supplies, $25. [August 12, 13, and 14, @ 1:30 thru 3:30 pm]

Matting and Framing with Wini Smart. In this one-day, two-hour course, Wini shows how to mount and frame a photo or artwork for best possible presentation. Get your entry ready for the Cranberry Inspiration Exhibit! This course is free! [July 16 @ 1:30 pm]

"Ways with Watercolor" Painting Workshop with Helen Bertles. For beginning and intermediate painters, this three-session course taught by an accomplished local artist builds basic beginners' confidence, and helps hone accomplished artists' skills. Each session is from 10:30 am to 3 pm. Take lunch, or eat at Hitty's Café. Full course of three sessions, $130; each individual session, $50. [July 8, 15, and 21 @ 10:30 am.]

"Playing with Words" Poetry Workshop with Sam King. Through exercises using evocative pictures, engaging in other arts, experience of nature, exploring word origins, writing in form, etc., enjoy the process of allowing words in particular patterns to express what, for you, is true, beautiful, and important. Full course of 5 sessions, $180; each individual 1.5- to 2-hour session, $40. Take lunch, or eat at Hitty's Café. [July 10, 17, 31, and August 7, all @ 2 pm, plus Aug 21 @ 10 am]

Digital Photography with Geoff Wadsworth & Bruce Komusin. A four-hour course in July, repeated again in August. Geoff Wadsworth guides the group around the island, showing how to take beautiful eye-catching photos in morning or afternoon light. Each image-capturing tour is followed by a hands-on two-hour editing session at Cranberry House, where Bruce Komusin explains the theory and practice of using an image editing program, such as Gimp, or Adobe Photoshop Elements, to optimize and print out the images taken during the tour. Full course of 1 photo shoot and 1 editing session, $75; each individual 2-hour session, $37.50.

Islander Portrait Talk & Exhibit. Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, and in cooperation with the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, printmaker Janet Badger of Bangor and photo journalist Becky Buyers-Basso launch a project to record a portion of the visual and oral history of some of the residents of Great Cranberry Island. All movies shown at Cranberry House are presented by the Great Cranberry Library, in cooperation with GCIHS.
Our special license for showing movies to the public does not allow us to list the movies on the internet, so as not to compete with regular movie theaters. However, you can pick up a printed list at the library, or at Cranberry House.
