Great Cranberry Island, Maine

An Artist's Sketchbook, 1998

by Susan Donald Michalski

Susan Donald Michalski has been visiting the island for years, keeping a sketch diary with charming and humorous watercolor vignettes of island life, buildings, and scenes.  She has given the Great Cranberry Island Historical Society permission to publish a collection of these sketches.

This 20-page professionally wire-bound open-flat booklet, printed on heavy paper, includes 47 watercolor reproductions in full color, annotated in Susan's own handwriting.  It makes a fine souvenir of the island.

Now available by mail order, it will also be available summer 2001 on Great Cranberry Island at the Whales Rib Gift Shop, or at the Historical Museum (with a discount for Historical Society members.)

Susan Michalski spent most summers on Great Cranberry Island with parents, Aunt Barbara, sister and brothers, nephews and nieces, grandparents, great uncles, cousins, and friends.  Her three children enjoyed their summers there and now her grandchild, Evan, comes to Cranberry.  The island was always special not only because of its magnificent beauty but also because the islanders and the Donald family had been friends since the 1800s.  There are many wonderful stories tucked away and some of them we shall never know, but this book helps give us a feeling for the people and Great Cranberry Island.  Susan lives in Grass Valley, California where she is presently illustrating and writing books and poetry.

"An artist's technical competence is essential but imagination, intuition, and what lies within your heart is crucial to reaching others.  I always have a series of paintings or prints evolving at the same time along with verbal dialog to accompany my art.  My mediums are watercolor, watercolor collage, pen and ink, colored pencil, and oil-based print inks."
